Animals Suffer Confinement
Animals raised for food endure confinement and stress, which leads to disease and abnormal behaviors.
Over half of the antibiotics produced in the US goes directly into animal feed. This is done to make them grow as quickly as possible in the shortest amount of time, but in most cases there has been no study on the effects these chemicals may have on humans.
On the way to slaughter animals can spend up to three days and nights, packed onto trucks, with no food or water. Many animals die in transit, or become too sick to make it to the slaughter. These animals are called downers, and are often dragged by chains to their death.
Animal Suffering
Cows are artificially inseminated, and kept pregnant to produce milk. The calves are taken from the mother - some destined to become veal calves and spending their entire lives in a stall, while others are raised for beef. Cattle are often branded, castrated, and de-horned, all without anesthesia.
Pigs and sows are crammed into individual cages just larger than their body. Their tails are cut off to prevent "tail biting" of other pigs. Over 80% of the pigs sent to slaughter suffer pneumonia because their extra- sensitive noses are constantly bom-barded by the stench from the pit of excrement below their confinement.
Chickens are packed tightly in cages, where they will spend their entire lives without ever feeling dirt beneath their feet or being able to spread their wings. Chickens are often de-beaked, without anesthesia, to prevent one chicken from pecking another in their tight quarters.
