The Facts On Ostrich
Ostrich - the new fad in food?
In the past few years the number of Ostrich farms has increased tremendously, riding the publicity wave. But there's something that's almost always left out of the discussions -- whether it be the deceptions about health benefits, or the terrible pain and suffering that these animals receive.
Some Facts on Ostrich:
- In their natural habitat, ostrich live to an age of 65 - 75 years old.
- When raised for their flesh, ostrich are slaughtered at 10 - 14 months old.
- The ostrich is native to Africa, but when kept captive on farms, can be found in any climate, even suffering through the cold winters in Rochester.
The Health Argument:
- Much of the popularity of ostrich can be attributed to the farmer's and rancher's claims of it's health benefits. Sure, it may seem healthier than the flesh of cows, pigs, or chickens. But the comparison to a vegan diet is never made.
- A vegan diet is one that does not include any flesh, dairy, eggs, or any other animal product or by-product. It is a compassionate diet, that is low in fat, and especially low in cholesterol. Comparing the flesh of ostrich to that of a chicken, or a cow shows that the amount of cholesterol they contain are virtually the same, but they can't compare to a cholesterol amount of near zero, which is the cholesterol intake of the average vegan diet.
The Slaughter:
The slaughter of ostrich can be especially painful, because they have such an incredible will to live. They are often killed while still very conscious, having their neck slit. Often their feathers are used for profit also, and are plucked while they are still alive, which is an excruciating ordeal for the ostrich.
What You Can Do:
- Go Vegan! A vegan diet will make you and the lives of numerous animals better.
- Don't support any business that sells ostrich meat, leather, or feathers.
