The Facts On Veal

Veal Calves are:
- Denied sufficient mother's milk.
- Trucked to auctions when only a day or two old.
- Commingled with sick and dying animals.
- Sold to veal factories where they are chained for life in individual crates only 22 inches wide.
- Fed government surplus skim milk.
- Denied solid food to chew on.
- Made anemic.
- Kept in the dark to reduce their restlessness.
- Plagued by respiratory and intestinal disease.
- Unable to lie down normally.
- Deprived of any bedding.
- Unable to walk at all, let alone romp and play.
The Veal Calf:
- Spends its life in a small, narrow stall, in total darkness. It has no contact with other animals. It cannot turn around or exercise.
- Is fed surplus milk and water. This is done to keep its flesh pale and tender
- Never lives to be more than six months old. It dies a senseless death; it is slaughtered for the taste of its flesh.
Offspring of Dairy Cows:
- The Dairy cow is artificially inseminated.
- Offspring:
- If the female resembles the mother, it stays in the milking herd.
- If the female resembles the father, it is reared for 2 years, then slaughtered for beef.
- If the male resembles the mother, it goes to the veal trade.
- If the male resembles the father, it is slaughtered for beef.
- The Veal Trade:
- The veal calf is separated from its mother 2 days after its birth.
- When 3 days old, it is taken to the local market where they are sold to exporters.
- When 20 days old, it is shipped or flown to where it will be reared.
