Kangaroos need our help!
They need our help NOW, not next week, not next month— NOW!

Right now kangaroo parts cannot be sold in California. That will change if SB 880 is enacted.

SB 880 will legalize the sale of kangaroo skins in California for the first time in 37 years.

SB 880 has cleared the Senate and is now in the Assembly.

NOW—RIGHT NOW --Please write, fax and e-mail a letter in OPPOSITION to SB 880. (Contact info is provided below.) Use the background information provided below:

SB 880 is blatant special interest legislation. SB 880 is the brainchild of Adidas, which is being sued for selling in California soccer shoes made with kangaroo skin. From the time the lawsuit was filed in 2003, Adidas has pumped $435,693 into the California Legislature to make the sale of kangaroo skin legal.

What will be the wholly predictable consequences of SB880?

If SB 880 is enacted California will be a participant in developing a global market in kangaroo-based products. One in eight residents in the United States lives in California; this is a huge market.

As the market develops more kangaroos will be shot and killed in terrible ways. Wild kangaroos are shot after being blinded with bright spotlights at night. The very few lucky ones "get " to die quickly. Others die slow, horrible deaths. In-pouch infants known as "joeys" are taken from their mothers' pouches and bludgeoned to death. Juveniles who are not yet independent but who are not in-pouch are left to die from starvation, disease, or predation.

The sponsors of SB 880 claim that no more kangaroos will be killed than are already killed. That cannot be true. As the demand for kangaroo-based products increases , Australia will increase the quotas for killing, and poachers will illegally kill many , many more.

Everyone knows that commercial exploitation of wild animals causes their extinction. Remember what the market for African elephants' ivory tusks and panda skin rugs did to African elephants and pandas? Let 's not let that happen to kangaroos!

But that is not all that can happen.

Ranchers in Australia are already poised to ranch kangaroos in order to supply the market. Ranchers will purposely breed the most docile of kangaroos and the ones with the most market-valuable skin and flesh. As wild kangaroo species fall to the poachers, one species of domesticated kangaroo will emerge. In our lifetimes, factory-farming of kangaroos could happen. Let 's not let that happen to kangaroos!

We need to take action against SB 880 while there is still some time left.

SB 880 will soon be heard by the Assembly's Committee on Water, Parks, and Wildlife. Please call, fax, or e-mail the following Committee members NOW!!!!!
